Happy Birthday, Mother Clelia!

The Kindergarten class, under the direction of teacher, Sister Bridget Smith, ASCJ, performed a play about the life of Mother Clelia Merloni, foundress of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  Her birthday is March 10, so the Villa community celebrated on Friday, March 9 with the special presentation, and a large birthday cake.

Mother Clelia was born in Forli, Italy on March 10, 1861.  Although from a wealthy family, Clelia was attracted to prayer and solitude at an early age.  She responded generously to God's call by choosing consecrated religious life.  On May 30, 1894, she founded the Congregation of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, sending sisters to the Americas at the turn of the century.  Her life was consumed in daily kindnesses and sacrifices for the needs of others and for the growth of the Congregation.  Mother Clelia died in Rome on November 21, 1930.  She has been declared Blessed, and her beatification ceremony will be held as soon as Pope Francis chooses the date.
