Sr. Matthew Maria Rancilio ASCJ

I was born and raised in St. Louis.  I attended St. Ambrose Catholic Elementary School and then Cor Jesu Academy.  I entered the religious congregation of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1969 and professed vows in 1972.  I have had a variety of ministerial experiences.

I began teaching primary grades at St. Patrick Catholic Elementary School in Tampa, Florida 1972 where I was missioned for six years.  I completed my Bachelor of Arts degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences with a concentration in history at the University of South Florida in 1978.

I was then transferred to New Haven, Connecticut to teach primary grades for six years. While in Connecticut I completed my Master of Science in Learning Disabilities from Southern Connecticut State University in 1986.  I also had Provisional Certification which expired in 1990.

With the completion of my degree I was sent to Clelian Heights School, a residential school for children with special needs.  While I was there, I began a religious education at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral for children special needs.  I was also asked to coordinate staff development programs.

In 1992 I returned to New Haven, CT to teach third grade at Sacred Heart School, an inner city school.  In After two years I volunteered to work with our retired Sisters at Sacred Heart Manor, in Hamden, CT.

While I was in Connecticut I completed  a certificate in Spiritual Direction from the Institute for Religious Education and Pastoral Studies at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut in 1998.  At the completion of this program I was transferred to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish in Meriden, CT.  For nine years I worked with the pastoral team to meet the needs of the people in this inner city parish.  My duties included coordinating Religious Education, Sacramental programs for First Eucharist and Confirmation, as well as bereavement counseling with the parishioners, and other pastoral  services.

In June of 2003 I completed a two year program from the Catholic Biblical School in the Archdiocese of Hartford.  The following year I was granted a sabbatical and studied Theology and Spirituality at St. Thomas University, the Angelicum, in Rome, Italy.  When I returned to the United States, I was sent to Sacred Heart Villa in St. Louis.

From 2004-2006 I reintroduced the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd at Sacred Heart Villa, while I took the Level I course at St. Francis Xavier Church.  I was then asked to begin the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Level  I program at Sacred Heart Learning Center in Bronx, NY.  While I worked in the Bronx I completed the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Level II course in in New Jersey with Betsy Puntel in 2009.

I was transferred to  Kaohsiung, Taiwan for six years to teach English to third and fourth grade students at St. Paul Bilingual School.

When I returned to the US in 2015 I was asked to work as a pastoral associate at St. Joseph Church in Shelton, CT.  I taught 4th and 5th grade religion to the elementary school students as well as fulfilling pastoral ministry duties in the parish.  Our Sisters withdrew from this parish in 2017, and I was then sent to Sacred Heart Villa to resume my ministry with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.
